Our Story

The Barry family has been an active member of the West Cork building community since the 1930s. Operating from Brewery Lane, North Street in the town of Skibbereen, the Barry family established P. Barry & Sons in the early days as a building business specialising in joinery, church furniture and coffins. P. Barry & Sons’ focus on best materials and workmanship led to its success, and resulted in it becoming one of the town’s largest employers throughout the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. P. Barry & Sons shaped the West Cork landscape and was responsible for the construction of some of its most recognisable landmarks which still stand today. 

 

In 1977 David Barry, son of one of the original Barry brothers Timothy (Ted), established Barry Bros also known as The Building Supply Stores. Since opening, Barry Bros has operated as a builders’ providers and hardware merchants from its premises on Townsend Street, Skibbereen. This premises had previously served Skibbereen as a builders merchants under another family’s stewardship. From 1977 onwards, Barry Bros grew its team. The long tenure of its members, as well as their construction experience, offers Barry Bros’ customers unparalleled expertise in building materials within West Cork. 

 

David Barry owned and managed Barry Bros until June 2022, at which time its management passed to David’s three daughters. Barry Bros, now run by Barry sisters, continues to proudly serve the West Cork community including its islands today.
